Nothing Beats A Great Story

For the past 2 weeks or so I’ve been on the phone, on Skype and jumping on conference calls back-to-back-to-back, talking to everyone and anyone about our new travel show, Ambitious Adventures.

We are 10 days away from launching the campaign on Kickstarter. (wow, 10 days away!)

It’s nerve racking to not know what’s going to happen on July 11th.

Will anyone care? Will anyone pay attention?

Will we hit our goal?

The scary thing about Kickstarter is that it’s public. And this is either going to be an epic victory or a very public failure.

Thus bringing me back to the nonstop calls I’ve been on. Between my co-host Brandon and I, we wanted to go into the campaign on July 11th with all of the funds already committed. We are going to be able to do this because of 2 very high-ticket pledge levels.

One is to be a producer of the entire first season.

The other is to have a feature segment produced on your business.

These are not small investment. Everyone we talk to wants to know numbers.

How many people are going to watch? What’s the reach? Who’s going to see this?

Now, let’s be real: this is important.

No one wants to go through a few weeks of filming, a few months of editing and an eternity marketing the show for no one to watch it. And you best believe I want a lot of people to tune in, check it out and love the show that we are putting together.

However, these are unknowns. There are a lot of unknowns. We are still finalizing the cities (based on the 2 backer levels I mentioned above). Everyday another city comes in and another goes out.

With all of these unknowns, I’ve had to rely on selling the story of the show. The story of what the show can mean for a city, a community, a young entrepreneurial scene.

I’m telling the story of someone seeing the episode of a particular city and deciding to move to that city to start their next business.

I’m telling the story of the companies that are pouring money into the local economy and the Venture Capital that has revitalized a downtown because of the episode we created in that city. Because of the stories in that episode that are so contagious you can’t help but want to be a part of the magic happening in the featured city.

I’m telling the story of the local economic development board screening the episode for potential investors and bringing their huge real estate deals into their city because they want to be a part of the energy they saw in the episode.

That is the power you can create through story.

After countless calls, and selling my products and services for the better part of 15 years, I know that nothing beats a great story.

Nothing beats telling a story that connects with someone emotionally.

On Wednesday night I was speaking with someone who is working on securing 3 sponsored segments for us and the story I told him had him in tears on the phone with me. It wasn’t manipulative. It was beautiful. It was a real moment.

No stat, or feature or benefit can provoke that kind of emotion. No flip-chart, PowerPoint slide or bullet point can come close to painting a beautiful picture with words.

And I believe in these stories. I’ve lived them.

Like the moment I walked the enchanted hallways of Madison Square Garden before rocking the stage for 3 songs in 7 short minutes in front of hundreds of music executives and thousands of fans and musicians.

I was shivering. Trembling.

I lost belief in myself and my music. I started feeling like I didn’t belong or didn’t deserve to be there. I got lost in the lights and began to black out.

The next thing you know I’m surround by my peers, getting hi-5’s and sitting at the bar reminiscing about the time I rocked The Garden!

In your business you need to find these stories. These moments. These emotional connections between what you do and how that will transform someone’s life.

My business partners Nick Nanton and JW Dicks have written the textbook on using stories to sell. It’s appropriately titled, StorySelling.

A few weeks ago Nick and I hosted a 4-hour Masterclass that broke down the core principles from the book and developed templates for you to tell your story like a Hollywood Blockbuster.

Today I want to help you tell the best stories in the world, so you can have the biggest impact in the world.

For the next 4 days, during the 4th of July weekend, I am going to give you $100 off that Masterclass, The Ambitious Guide To StorySelling.

All you need to do is click here to learn more about the class and enter the Promo Code “STORY” when you check out to take $100 off the retail price of the course.
